Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Head of Game Management to lead our deer management and game bird team (excluding Grouse). The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of deer stalking, deer management and gamekeeping practices, a passion for wildlife conservation and a commitment to maintaining the estate’s prestigious reputation. The role demands a commitment to preserving the best of tradition while also being progressive and innovative to keep the Estate at the forefront of sporting and conservation excellence.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement and manage deer management programs to sustain a healthy and balanced population.• Ensure annual cull targets are met ethically.• Oversee all aspects of the game bird shoots, including planning, sourcing, and releasing game birds.• Develop and implement effective game bird management strategies to ensure a sustainable and thriving game bird population.• Collaborate with the Estate management team to plan and execute stalking and shoot days, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience for guests so the Estate remains a premier destination for guests.• Monitor and maintain habitat quality, including predator control and habitat enhancement projects.• Lead, mentor, and manage a team of stalkers and gamekeepers, fostering a culture of excellence and professionalism.• Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and best practices in gamekeeping and wildlife management.• Maintain and enhance the estate’s natural resources, landscapes, and heritage.• Oversee the welfare and management of the stalking ponies.• Promote sustainable practices and innovative solutions to enhance the Estate’s operations and environmental impact.• Liaise with external stakeholders, including deer management groups, regulatory bodies, suppliers, and neighbouring estates.• Manage budgets and resources effectively, ensuring cost-efficient operations.• Supporting the wider Estate in maintenance of key infrastructure using a wide range of plant and machinery.• A sound and practical knowledge of Health & Safety process and procedures and the ability to work effectively within these processes.

Role Requirements

• Extensive experience in deer stalking, gamekeeping and deer and game management, preferably within a large sporting estate.• Strong leadership and team management skills.• In-depth knowledge of deer, game bird species, habitat requirements, and predator control.• Proven track record in developing and executing habitat management plans and wildlife conservation.• Experience in venison butchery, ensuring the highest quality and hygiene standards are met.• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, whilst balancing tradition with innovation, ensuring the Estate’s continued success and evolution.• Commitment to wildlife conservation and ethical deer management and gamekeeping practices.• Relevant certifications and qualifications in butchery, gamekeeping, wildlife management and first aid are desirable.• Powerboat licence (or willingness to get one).
