Head Gardener Position

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head Gardener to join our existing small team, at a large Country House / Farm in Country Durham. The property comprises a historic mansion house, with associated formal gardens, kitchen garden and parklands, along with woodlands and agricultural land. The property is managed to an extremely high standard and we are seeking a motivated individual to lead a small gardening and maintenance team to maintain and develop these standards in all aspects of gardening and landscaping.

The Head Gardener will be responsible for:

• Direct line management of a team of three people, including an estate maintenance role.
• Management and maintenance of the gardens, parkland and wider property. This includes a kitchen garden, glass house, orangery, extensive topiary and hedging, parkland maintenance and woodland maintenance.
• Assistance with development of exciting new projects
• Responsibility for the maintenance and servicing of a range of very modern equipment and machinery
• Day to day responsibility for Health & Safety matters and reporting any issues to the managing agents.
• Responsibility for day to day running of the Estate biomass system.
• Occasional driving / airport runs will be required.

The position is live in and we are offering a very attractive package, including a recently refurbished 2 bedroom house (other options are available), along with a highly competitive salary, depending upon experience.

Whilst we are seeking to speak to individuals with a relevant horticultural qualification, we are equally seeking to recruit the right person for our small team, so if you have experience in managing small teams and have some relevant landscaping / gardening experience and have a strong work ethic / are self motivated and wish to work in a fantastic environment, then we would be pleased to hear from you!

This is a full time position and some evening and weekend working will be required when the principle is in residence. A full driving licence is essential and whilst vocational qualifications are an advantage, are not essential as training will be provided.
