We have an exciting horticultural opportunity available for an individual with a passion for plants, vegetables and machinery skill set. As a gardener, you will be playing a vital role in ensuring our gardens are a wonderful place to visit and spend time. You will be part of a team of gardeners caring for and working on the gardens and existing areas of Cokenach. The core of your work will be focused at Cokenach in the Park and Gardens although at times your help will be needed at the peripheral areas of the Estate.
Background
This horticultural role has been created to meet the current and future needs of the Walled Gardens and Parkland. This position offers a unique opportunity for you to shape and craft your career within this department.
Previous time working within a country estate would be beneficial. You should be enthusiastic, be effective and efficient when working on your own or as part of a wider team. Depending on your skills and interests, we are happy to organise additional training to enable you to work at the highest standards possible.
What will you be doing
As an Estate Gardener, you will:
· Maintain beautiful gardens, including varied perennial schemes and specimen trees
· Produce a high standard of care and presentation to all areas
· Take pride in all jobs assigned to yourself including weeding, pruning, hedge cutting, grass cutting and strimming
· Have or develop skills in staking, propagation, tying in and training of fruit trees and climbers
· Be using ride-on mowers and handheld machinery, so a good proficiency is expected
· Be required to carry out other reasonable duties as required
· Ensure all Health and Safety procedures are adhered to
Responsibilities
· Plant and nurture new trees, flowers and various plants
· Assessing the health of plants, trees and turf and diagnosing plant diseases and pests
· Planning and implementing seasonal planting plans
· Applying fertiliser, pesticides and other garden chemicals according to safety instructions and regulations
· Operating and maintaining garden machinery and tools, including mowers, trimmers and sprayers
· Maintain a clean garden by clearing rubbish and litter from the garden and grounds
· Advise management on the costs of plants and garden necessities with detailed quotations and reports
· Working with other staff and contractors to ensure overall maintenance of the estate
· Maintaining records of work activities, plantings, and chemical applications
What to expect
You will be expected to be presentable at all times, utilising estate workwear and PPE where required.
You will need to have
· A full, clean driving licence
· Written and verbal communication skills
· Basic IT skills
· Teamworking skills and a collaborative approach to work
· Decision making skills
· The ability to multitask and prioritise your workload
· The ability to motivate yourself and set your own goals
· A flexible approach to work with the ability to adapt to fast-paced, ever-changing environment
