We are currently seeking to recruit a Shepherd to join our Farm Department Team. The position will suit an energetic and hard working individual, who will be able to work on his own and as part of the team out on the hills in all weathers.

The main duties of the role will include:

  • Assist the Farm Manager with the day-to-day management of allocated tups, ewes and followers, their welfare, and all associated animal husbandry matters;
  • Inspect sheep regularly for pest and insect infestations and treat accordingly;
  • Shepherd the Estate’s flock in an appropriate manner. This will include limited use of ATV’s whilst gathering sheep, which will otherwise be carried out on foot as mainly required; 
  • Purchase and adequately train sufficient sheep dogs, to be able to carry out own duties.

Candidates will need to demonstrate in their application that they have the following skills:

·         The ability to work on their own as well as part of a team;

·         At least 5 years experience in working in a similar role

·         Experience in using farm machinery

·         Clean driving licence

·         Training Certificates for working with: Tractor loader, trailer, chainsaw, ATV / Quad.

The role reports to the Farm Manager of Luss Estates Company.

Tied housing will be provided on the Estate for the better performance of the Shepherd’s duties.

The remuneration package for this role will be depending on experience

Predator Control Contract

The Warslow Moors Estate is located in a central part of the Leek Moors SSSI and is particularly valued for its population of breeding wader birds such as Curlew, Lapwing and Snipe. The Peak District National Park Authority is looking for a suitably qualified and discreet contractorl to work closely with them to undertake a predator control contract as part of a nationally important upland management project.Expressions of interest are invited to discuss targeting predation during important periods of the year preceding a formal tendering process for a predator control contract covering three seasons of 2018, 2019 and 2020. Applicants must be experienced, well equipped and dedicated in order to achieve the primary aim of increasing wader breeding success, using targeted and efficient predation control techniques.  A working knowledge of the current (and changing) legal requirements and best practice methods for predator control are essential for this role.

The successful candidate will be expected to get involved in all of the above estate activities with day to day responsibilities including; maintenance and small repairs of residential and agricultural properties, fencing, painting, strimming, grass cutting, gardening, tree planting and trimming, and general Estate tasks as required. 
The Successful candidate should have extensive experience in working outdoors as well as experience in with the main trades. Candidate must be motivated, organised, flexible and polite, have a proven track record in sole-working, and must hold a current UK driving license. 
Ideally applicants should have appropriate chainsaw certificates, spraying certificates, and trailer license. Preferred candidates would have further relevant training but the employer would also look to provide training where necessary for the successful candidate. A rural background would be preferred. Suitable training and PPE will be provided for this role.

Volunteer Gamekeeper's Assistant needed urgently

The role involves assisting with:

  • Maintaining the pens in the off season
  • Building/making pens, shelters, feeders and drinkers
  • Feeding, particularly from July to March, checking electric fences,
    Water, Vermin control – lamping, trapping
  • General maintenance, habitat improvements, woodland improvements, ride maintenance
  • Taking delivery of the birds in July and August
  • Helping to manage, organise and run the beating line
  • Bracing and counting the bag and generally assisting the Gamekeeper

The infrastructure of the shoot is in good condition with all pens, feeders and drinkers in place. There is a quad bike and trailer for getting round as necessary.
We shoot seven days always on a Saturday between November 4th and Feb 1st.
Elevenses Port/Whiskey cheese and biscuits.
There are normally eight guns in the line and c. fifteen beaters and 100 bird days.
The role is unpaid although Beaters wages on shoot days, various other expenses, pigeon shooting and vermin control and, of course, a fully driven beater’s day at the end of the season. 
It would suit someone of any age, living within twenty minutes of Great Bardfield Essex who is interested in Gamekeeping, not afraid of hard work and is willing to learn.
