As part of this programme we are looking for a self-starter with a love of outdoor working who is experienced in grey squirrel control work, to fill a new Grey Squirrel Officer post. The post will contribute to the project’s co-ordinated landscape-scale approach to reduce grey squirrel numbers in the target area of Nithsdale, preventing re-colonisation of areas cleared of grey squirrels.   The successful candidates will possess a SVQ/NVQ level 2 or equivalent qualification in Game and Wildlife Management or related discipline or relevant experience of game keeping, invasive/non-native mammal control or pest control, along with good understanding of conservation principles, practices and legislation. You should have the ability to keep accurate records in Excel. Relevant previous experience is essential, together with experience of working with foresters, landowners and members of the public. Knowledge of forest and native tree is advantageous. Some out of normal hours working will be required and you must possess a full clean driving licence. The nature of the work requires that you should be locally-based.

A small but well established Animal and Wildlife management company has a vacancy for a Predator Control Operator working on a self employed basis on a fixed term contract. Starting sometime in September 2018 until June 2019. (Possibility of extension for the right candidate)

Duties will include, but not exclusively, controlling foxes and other predators as part of ongoing contracts with many high profile companies. This role involves control and management of  wildlife by trapping and shooting.  These activities are aimed towards the conservation of wildlife species in particular wader species . Often working at night, you must be willing to work days and nights on a rotational basis normally 14 days on and 7 days off. Full board and lodgings will be supplied whilst working. There is no permanent accommodation.

The work is currently being carried out in Scotland so access to a reliable car to get to your place of work at the start of  the 2 week shift is essential.

Essential Requirements

Shooting or Firearms experience with excellent firearms handling and safety discipline. (Those persons with previous military experience especially welcome to apply.)

Presentable with the ability to carry out all duties in a professional and exemplary manner.

Able to communicate and get on well with others operating well within a team environment.

A good understanding of UK wildlife species and habitats. A love and understanding of the countryside and natural environment with good wildlife species identification skills.

The Mulgrave Estate is a large and diverse rural Estate located on the North Yorkshire Coast, in the North York Moors National Park. The Estate extends to 15,000 acres, including 2,500 acres of woodland and a Registered Park and Garden (RPG) around Mulgrave Castle, the seat of the Marquis of Normanby. A private home, Mulgrave is a vibrant and evolving Estate and is proud of its role in the local area and community.

The Role

This role is a varied one and will include chauffeur & driving duties both in Yorkshire and London, assisting with managing the wildlife and general security. The role will involve working in some of the Estates most important historic and visual landscapes as well as in the Castle and a busy Estate Office. Every week will be different, and duties will alter subject to the needs of the owners and the Estates Director. A clean driving licence is expected.

Reporting jointly to the Estates Director and Castle Manager, you will assist with a wide range of estate functions and provide support to other estate staff, including the Wildlife Manager, as and when requested. Candidates should be highly motivated and organised with the ability to prioritise workloads. A presentable individual you will be discrete, flexible and attentive, with good IT skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

The role will carry out Fleet Management for the Estates vehicles and assist with Health & Safety compliance.

Specific Duties

These include:

Driving the Estate owners both in Yorkshire & London when required, as well as errands and regular produce runs between the Estate and other family residences. An advanced driving certificate is required.

Fleet Management for the Estate, including organisation of MOT’s, Services and maintenance.

Assist the Wildlife Manager with Pest and Vermin control, including fox, mole, rabbit, corvids, pigeon and grey squirrel. You will ideally hold both a Firearms and Shotgun Certificate.

Assist the Estate Office with Health & Safety compliance and administration.

Assist and work as part of the security team at Mulgrave Castle.

Certificates of competency relating to the use of ATV’s, pest control methods & trapping are desired. Training would be available for the right applicant if required.

Hours:   Full Time – 40 hrs per week. The nature of the post requires you to be flexible in your hours of work, which will include some day and night work.

Salary:   Range £20-25,000 per annum depending on experience. Accommodation within the Mulgrave Castle complex is included to enable the Security element of this role.

We would also consider an experienced under keeper looking for a move up to head keeper. The successful applicant will be responsible for recruiting an under keeper in 2019.  Applicants will need to demonstrate a history of rearing birds and running days in a similar environment.  A strong work ethic and enthusiasm are essential, as is the ability to develop good working relationships with other estate tenants, the agents and landowner. Working primarily from Achfary, the successful applicant will join the Estate’s maintenance team and primarily be involved with maintenance of buildings and infrastructure with wide ranging duties across the Estate as required, ideally including the ability to undertake joinery tasks to a high standard. Communicating effectively with the Head of Departments, contractors and team members on a daily basis will be a prerequisite.

Ideally you will be familiar with the seasonal demands of fishing, shooting and stalking. Experience of working on a private Estate is not essential but a positive, can do approach is.

The position requires a confident and credible candidate, who will report to the Reay Forest Estate Foreman and be comfortable leading the day to day activities of the Maintenance team and deputising in the absence of the Foreman. Personal qualities include a practical and hands on approach to problem solving and a strong attention to detail. The successful candidate will be flexible and willing to commit to the necessary hours during busy periods of the year or as required.
